Healthy eating should NOT leave you hungry.

My perspective on this topic a huge part of what I’m about as a nutrition coach so I thought it deserved its own article…

The key to fat loss and maintaining a healthy weight is NOT withstanding hunger. Being hungry IS NOT part of a healthy diet. I don’t know about you but I HATE being hungry! It makes me grumpy, sad, tired and a mega bitch. It usually leads to over eating and poorer food choices.

We should be LISTENING to our body’s signals (like hunger) NOT IGNORING them. Let’s take a minute to understand WHY you are hungry and solve it, not just shovel in the closest edible item. If you find yourself hungry between your meals and snacks, below are the top 3 reasons that could be causing your hunger:

#1

You’re thirsty
You’ve been ignoring your bodies thirst signals and now your brain is thinking “maybe we can get her to eat something juicy just to get some fluids in!”
It can’t hurt to grab 2 glasses of water and see if that was really what you needed.

#2

Macronutrient imbalance
Think about what you have eaten the meal and snack previous to when you started to feel hungry, what did you eat? Did it include enough protein?
Protein is the fuel source that helps satisfy hunger and keeps you feeling full for longer. Increasing your protein intake particularly early in the day can give you the right start to keep hunger from distracting you.

#3

You don’t eat regularly
If you’re someone who often grabs a bite when you have time or doesn’t have regular meals and snacks, hunger can plague you all day. If you plan regular meal and snack times each day your energy levels will be more stable and it will keep you more focussed.
Again, starting the day with an adequate breakfast can stop you playing catch up trying to get enough energy in from caffeine and quick snacks.
