Exercise ISN’T the only answer…
Truth bomb.
A lot of people I talk to assume they only way to lose weight is to get to the gym more, run everyday & really push themselves hard with strenuous exercise. And that just sounds too hard, so they stay where they are.
BUT I want you to know it’s way easier than that, and all that extra slog in the gym can actually be working against you. It can increase your appetite like crazy and if you are refuelling with unhealthy snacks you may actually be putting on weight. :/
Let’s break down the science on this and I’ll show that its not all bad.
Understanding ENERGY BALANCE can help you visualise what you need to do:
This is how we burn energy (calories)
• 70% Bodily functions
A.K.A just being alive
• 15% Movement
e.g moving around the house, waling stairs, putting the bins out etc…
• 10% Digesting food
• 5% Exercise
Yep. Sloggin it at the gym is only 5% of our total energy expenditure. Yes we need it in there but let’s not over exaggerate it’s benefits of energy burning.
The takeaway from this?
Is that you DON'T need excessive exercise to lose weight, since it's such a small slice of the pie.
So do I mean exercise is bad for us?
No!
Exercise is great for you in lots of ways:
Mental health & stress relief
Heart & lung health
Strength & mobility
Releasing endorphins for wellbeing
—but it's not the be-all-and-end-all for fat-loss.
Fat-loss is MUCH EASIER than you think!
You just have to focus on the right routines and habits that make up the 95%:
Fuelling your metabolism
Eating a balanced diet that leaves you feeling full, satisfied and more energetic.
Listening to your emotions
Improving your sleep
Focusing on your daily movement
