Don’t start in the deep end
Imagine being dropped in the ocean & told to swim 3kms back to shore without stopping. Sure it’s technically achievable, you can swim but that’s a HUGE ask without any training or preparation right? You are likely to panic, use A LOT of excess energy, lose direction and most likely call out the closest boat to get you the hell outta there.
Instead of being thrown in the deep end, if you committed to training & planned out a strategy to make the distance you would more than likely succeed.
This is how I look at achieving a calorie deficit for fat loss. Jumping straight into a strict calorie budget that could be 1000+ calories per day LESS than you currently eat will be excruciating. Just cutting out calories without a plan will only work for a short period (like probs not even a week). Hunger will send you crazy, grumpy & questioning why you want to do it. Throw on a huge sudden increase in exercise too and you’re odds of a win will drop off the chart.
There is a MUCH better way that will serve you well long after your calorie deficit period is over & will also help you sustain your results.
Track food & movement habits to determine the starting point.
Education on macronutrient balance specific to you and our goals.
Improve the macronutrient balance of your meals & consistency of your weekly movement one change at a time.
Address problematic eating behaviours (e.g restrict/binge cycles, emotional eating)
After these 4 steps there still hasn’t been any mention of a calorie budget. But why? Laying the foundations of a good balanced diet (using the above steps) will see your body & mind receive the nutrients it needs to thrive. You will also have naturally reduced your caloric intake quite significantly too.
3 benefits will have already happened as a result:
You have been “training” & now have a thriving, well fuelled body & mind ready to tackle your health goal.
You’ll be significantly closer to a calorie deficit & much smaller changes will be needed to achieve this.
Once your fat loss phase is over, you already know how to eat to sustain the results for good.
I don’t know about you but this sounds waaaay more appealing than hangry, brain foggy, emotional calorie-slashing without a game plan, yeah?
