Healthy Isn't About Being Attractive
Although... I do think healthy is incredibly attractive.
Let's get one thing straight.
I think healthy people are hot.
Not because they're a certain dress size.
Not because they have visible abs.
Not because they look like they belong on the cover of a fitness magazine.
They're attractive because they look alive.
They have energy.
They stand tall.
They move well.
They smile more.
They laugh.
They have confidence that comes from what their body can do, not just how it looks.
That's a very different kind of attractive.
And I think we've forgotten the difference.
We've Mixed Up Two Different Things
Somewhere along the way, "healthy" became a look.
Lean.
Toned.
Young.
Wrinkle-free.
Perfect skin.
Flat stomach.
But none of those things actually tell you very much about someone's health.
Someone can look incredible in a photo...
...and have poor cardiovascular fitness.
Low bone density.
High stress.
Terrible sleep.
No strength.
An unhealthy relationship with food.
On the flip side, someone else might carry a little extra body fat...
...yet have excellent blood pressure, strong muscles, healthy bones, great mental wellbeing and enough energy to chase their kids around all weekend.
Which person is healthier?
The answer isn't always obvious from the outside.
Health Is What Your Body Can Do
I wish we spent less time asking...
"How do I look?"
And more time asking...
"How well does my body work?"
Can you climb a flight of stairs without stopping?
Can you carry your shopping?
Can you get down on the floor and back up again?
Can you play with your kids?
Can you lift heavy things?
Can you concentrate at work?
Can you recover after a busy week?
Can you enjoy your life?
These are health markers too.
And unlike the number on the scales, they actually improve your quality of life.
The Things That Really Matter
The research is remarkably consistent.
The biggest predictors of healthy ageing aren't whether you fit into your jeans from ten years ago.
They're things like...
Muscle
Muscle helps you stay independent as you age.
It protects your metabolism.
Supports balance.
Reduces the risk of falls.
Makes everyday life easier.
Bone Density
Strong bones don't just matter when you're older.
The habits you build today influence your risk of fractures decades from now.
Resistance training and good nutrition are investments in your future self.
Cardiovascular Fitness
Your heart doesn't care what size your jeans are.
It cares whether you move.
Walking.
Cycling.
Swimming.
Dancing.
Pilates.
Strength training.
Your heart simply wants you to use it.
Brain Health
Exercise improves blood flow to the brain.
Good nutrition provides the building blocks your brain needs.
Sleep helps it recover.
Stress management protects it over time.
Looking after your brain is just as important as looking after your waistline.
Happiness
This one doesn't get talked about enough.
Joy.
Connection.
Purpose.
Friendship.
Laughter.
These aren't bonuses.
They're part of health.
A life filled with anxiety, restriction and constant self-criticism isn't healthier simply because it comes in a smaller body.
Health Should Give You More Life
Imagine two women.
One spends every day chasing a smaller body.
She's exhausted.
Avoids social events because of food.
Exercises because she feels guilty.
Thinks about calories all day.
The other woman also exercises.
She lifts weights.
Walks most days.
Eats nourishing food most of the time.
Enjoys birthday cake.
Laughs with friends.
Sleeps well.
Feels capable.
Who looks healthier?
Who is more likely to still be active, independent and enjoying life at 80?
That's the version of health I'm interested in.
What If We Measured Different Things?
Instead of asking...
"Did I lose weight this month?"
What if you asked...
Am I stronger?
Do I have more energy?
Am I sleeping better?
Am I less out of breath?
Am I happier?
Do I recover more quickly?
Do I feel more confident?
Can I do things today that I couldn't do three months ago?
Now you're measuring health.
Not appearance.
The H for Health Philosophy
I have absolutely nothing against wanting to look good.
Feeling confident in your body is a wonderful thing.
But I never want appearance to become the only reason you look after yourself.
Because looks change.
Bodies change.
We age.
Wrinkles appear.
Hair goes grey.
Skin changes.
What lasts is the life your body allows you to live.
The walks you can take.
The grandchildren you can lift.
The holidays you can enjoy.
The confidence to say yes to adventures.
That's the kind of health worth chasing.
And ironically...
When you spend years looking after your body because you value what it can do...
There's a pretty good chance you'll look healthier too.
Not because you were chasing attractiveness.
Because health has a way of showing itself.
Start TODAY By...
The next time you look in the mirror, ask yourself a different question.
Instead of...
"How does my body look?"
Ask...
"How is my body serving me today?"
Did it carry you through a busy day?
Help you hug someone you love?
Take you for a walk?
Let you dance in the kitchen?
Keep your heart beating without you even thinking about it?
Your body is doing incredible things every single day.
Maybe it's time we started measuring it by that.
Ready to Build a Healthier Future?
If you're tired of chasing smaller and ready to start building stronger, I'd love to help.
My approach isn't about perfection or punishment. It's about creating a body that supports the life you want to live—for years to come.
💚 Because healthy isn't about becoming more attractive. It's about becoming more capable.
I think one sentence from this article deserves to become a signature H for Health quote:
"The goal isn't to have a body that is admired. The goal is to have a body that carries you through a long, active and joyful life."
That feels like the heart of your philosophy.
